Happy Fat Tuesday Everyone!

In the Protiviti Houston office today, we celebrated Madi Gras in style with our very own king cake.

Left to Right:  Manager Joe, Consultant Matt, Associate Director Ashley, Coordinator Leslie, Consultant Bobby, Coordinator Kate, Manager Matt and Senior Manager Caleb

For those of you who do not know the meaning of the French saying "laissez les bons temp rouler"("Let The Good Times Roll"), you might not know the significance behind the famous king cake. Traditionally, a plastic baby is placed inside the king cake and the guest who receives the slice containing the trinket is named king or queen of the party, but is required to supply the next king cake or host the next party, or both!

By the time this blog has hit the press, the kind or queen has yet to be crowned.  One of the best parts about working at Protiviti is learning about various traditions and cultures not only internationally, but across the United States.  The Houston office has many Louisiana natives, who do not let us forget their roots and heritage on important days to them.  According to Associate Director, Ashley, "Mardi gras, to me, isn't complete without fried chicken and a king cake."

Sounds like my kind of holiday celebration, food and fun!

March Madness is upon us, and the Chicago office is celebrating the season in a big way!  Protiviti Chicagoans were invited to show their school spirit don their favorite school’s apparel to the office during the first two days of the tournament.  Everyone gathered in the café area of the office to watch the games on TV throughout the day, keeping up on how their bracket’s performance with a little bit of friendly competition provided by their fellow consultants.

Outside of enjoying the games in the office, Protiviti offered its employees a variety of ways to get involved in the fun of March Madness including bracket competitions to compete against some of the Managing Directors , another entirely dedicated to raising money for charity, and a happy hour in the office complete with drinks and snacks for all fans!

Q&A With an Emerging Leader

At Protiviti we are proud to see our people recognized for the great things they achieve.  One such recent accolade was given to Leslie Bordelon, a Senior Manager in our Houston office.  Leslie was celebrated as an emerging leader by Ia Magazine, the official magazine of The Institute of Internal Auditors.  You can read the full article by clicking here.

We have known Leslie to be a star ever since she interned with Protiviti and returned as a full-time consultant after graduation.  Leslie is a great example of what all of our students can achieve!  I asked her to share some thoughts on her journey from student to professional and the value that she gets now from working with recent graduates.

Q:  As a proud graduate of Louisiana State University, how did your academic background prepare you for your career in consulting?

A:  The LSU CIA program instilled a sense of professionalism and work ethic that I might not have otherwise learned so early on.  The program teaches valuable life lessons (the importance of punctuality, appropriate dress in the workplace, determination, perseverance, teamwork, etc.) as well as critical application skills related to internal audit.  I had great teachers and mentors at LSU that always pushed me to succeed and try harder, which has led me to where I am today.

Q:  As an emerging leader, how do you mentor new hires on your projects, and how do you continue to learn from them?

A:  Early on in my career, building relationships with those around me was very important.  I had great leaders who took the time to mentor me and teach me in various ways.  I was very deliberate to make note of certain practices that my managers and leaders put into place that helped me to feel appreciated and motivated – and also those things that I wish they had done differently.  I tried to make sure that I adopted the skills that I admired in the leaders that came before me, and tried not to repeat the behaviors or managing styles that I didn’t like as much.

I also make sure that teaching is a big part of everything that we do at client sites.  I see one of my primary responsibilities as teaching those that work with me why and how we do something, not just assigning tasks.  It may take additional time to do this, but it shows new hires that we care about career development, and it also helps us in the long run when they can then make informed decisions later on.  All of the new hires that join my projects are given an extensive training on the client and industry in their first week.  We then make sure that we explain each task we give to them in great detail before assigning them out.  It is very exciting for me to see someone whom I have taught pass the knowledge on to another new hire down the road.  It shows that they not only truly understood the information, but valued the learning experience enough to take the time to pass it along to others.

Q:  What advice do you have for students who are just starting their internships or full-time careers and looking to follow a similar career path?

A:  Over the years I have given and received great advice on this topic:

  • Be very deliberate and intentional with your career.
  • Try your hardest to surround yourself with people who care about you as a person, not just your work product.
  • Learn as much as you can – but don’t be afraid to say “I don’t know.”
  • Never take credit for something that isn’t your work.
  • Always be a team player, have integrity, and treat others with respect – no matter who they are.
  • Don’t be a complainer!
  • Find ways to make yourself stand out.
  • Be known as someone who will go the extra mile.
  • Learn to balance efficiency and effectiveness in terms of your work product, and know that many times “perception is reality.”
  • Never send an email when you are upset!
  • Be someone you would want to sit next to and work with for 8 hours a day.

Congratulations to Leslie and all the emerging leaders who work so hard and contribute so much!

Texas MS 150 - From Houston to Austin!

Earlier this month 31 Protiviti employees from the Houston office participated in a 150 mile bike ride to help improve the quality of life for people affected by Multiple Sclerosis and to raise funds for MS research. The course was split over two days and 150+ miles as riders biked from Houston, TX to Austin, TX.

Along the way, Protiviti (partnered with Vantage Drilling) had several tents for riders to take a break. Other employees volunteered to help set up, cook food, and cheer on our riders as they pushed through day one and the first 82 miles.

After surviving day one, riders camped out in La Grange, TX. Here they enjoyed showers, a massage, and good food as they prepared for their second and final leg of the ride. They woke up Sunday, warmed up their muscles and powered on as they finished their ride to Austin, TX.

In the end, Protiviti’s 31 riders were able to raise almost $37,000 for the National Multiple Sclerosis Society!! Rumor has it; they are already gearing up for next year!

Bring Your Child to Work Day in the NY Office – A Great Success!

Today at the New York office, we celebrated “Bring Your Child to Work Day” with some of the cutest Protiviti offspring!  We had a great team help to organize fun, educational activities that aimed to teach the kids about Protiviti and what their mom’s and dad’s do while they are at school. Some of those activities included a coloring activity, Bingo, “Who Wants to Be a Millionaire?”, and office decorating. Winners of each event won Protiviti Dollars that they were able to turn in for some “sweet” prizes at the end of the day, pun intended.  We’d like to thank everyone who participated for such a successful and fun morning!

As we are almost a month away (yes, we are counting) from one of the most anticipated weeks of the year, The Intern Challenge, we would like to celebrate one of our very own TIC supporters, Carol Beaumier. She has been recognized in Consulting magazine’s Top 25 Consultants list in the Leadership category. As Executive Vice President of Strategic Planning, it only furthers our support behind her in being one of Protiviti’s fearless leaders.

Carol not only helps lead Protiviti but she has been a constant supporter of The Intern Challenge. She will be attending her 5thIntern Challenge this year to impart wisdom to our new 2014 interns. In her blog, Carol mentions being “energized by [the interns’] enthusiasm and eagerness to learn new things” and credits our interns to opening her eyes to social issues. As she states, “The learning is far from one-sided.” We are certainly excited to hear what Carol has to teach us this year!

If that isn’t enough to make you excited, last year her team won the annual Salsa Competition. So I’m sure she’s looking forward to defending her title this summer!

Congratulations Carol!

Last Saturday, Houston’s Protiviti and Robert Half offices came together to volunteer their time and talents at the 2014 Special Olympics Spring Games. This was our fourth year participating in the event and is one that many of our professionals look forward to. The day was full of joy and good fun as the Protiviti and Robert Half teams cheered on over 500 Special Olympics participants. The volunteers led events including the softball toss and mini javelin. Seeing the determination on these individual’s faces was very inspiring and rewarding. We had a great day and learned so much from these wonderful athletes!

Let the Intern Countdown begin!

To me, a picture is worth a thousand words. For The Intern Challenge, a picture can be worth a million words or leave you completely speechless.

With my limited experience (actually, zero experience) at The Intern Challenge, the only knowledge I have about it has been told in stories and pictures from past interns, new consultants, managers, and my recruiting team. I can honestly say for the past 9 months I have heard the greatest things about this one week in June, and I have been looking forward to it since I started at Protiviti.

The Intern Challenge may be deemed as the most exciting week of the summer, but we shouldn't let that take away from the rest of the internship. Each office has planned exciting events from baseball games to chocolate making events to comedy shows. College may be the best 4 years of your life, but this may be the best 8 weeks of your summer. And it's only ONE MONTH away.

And with that, I'll leave you with only one more thing- Let the countdown begin!!

Twas The Night Before The Intern Program

Twas the night before the Intern program, when all through Protiviti
The recruiters were stirring, more than a mouse.
The backpacks were packed in the training rooms with care,
Knowing the largest group of #ProtivitiInterns would soon be here.

The Interns were shopping for last minute business casual outfits,
While visions of what was in store danced in their heads.
And Managing Directors and myself,
Were ensuring multiple consulting projects were assigned to each Intern.

When in the break room there arose such a clatter,
We went to see what was happening….
We found out that we were going to have the BEST Intern Class yet!

Tomorrow we have over 150 Interns joining Protivit from top ranked business schools around the country, these Interns are high achievers who have part-time jobs, athletic commitments, extra-curricular leadership roles, scholarship recipients, rock bands, you name it… they are coming to Intern at Protiviti.  Our Summer 2014 Intern class has academic disciplines ranging from accounting, to technology focused majors, finance and supply chain. The Protiviti Intern program will run through the course of the summer giving our Interns real life experience by having them as integral parts on project teams working for Fortune 100 companies.  At Protiviti we provide the Intern an opportunity to have face-to-face interaction with many executives including our CEO and Executive Team while at training.

I hope you will check back to visit our blog throughout the summer, as we have many exciting things happening at our training class next week (known as the The Intern Challenge), Kickball games, our first ever U.S. Intern Day of Service on July 11th, golfing outings, networking opportunities, scavenger hunts, and sporting activities in over thirty major cities this summer in the U.S.

We had a great time listening to several members of Protiviti leadership as they shared their  background, knowledge, and experience with our interns. Our interns were also able to ask questions including "What is one piece of advice you'd give to an intern?" The answer was to always "say yes."
