#GetABitFit Challenge

This summer, Protiviti took the challenge to become more fit through our National #GetABitFit Challenge.  Thanks to everyone at Protiviti who pledged to get into shape, we logged an incredible 12,701,660 steps in over a month's time.

Employees were rewarded for their fitness efforts with both top and weekly prizes including an iPad Mini, $100 gift cards to Nike, and $50 gift cards to LuLuLemon and Whole Foods!

Based on our internal communication it appears we had a lot of fun getting a bit fit and getting to know our colleagues better.  Throughout the contest we had many people share photos of where they were getting fit.  See if any of these photos are from trails near you!

Bowl-A-Thon in NYC!!

For the New York summer outing we had a Bowl-A-Thon at Frames on 40th Street and 9th Ave. As each team had a different number of players and bowled at a different pace, all scores were averaged by the number of players and number of frames completed. The scores were printed and tabulated at the conclusion of the event and trophies were awarded to the winning team. We had a great turn out this year with 17 teams of varying sizes signing up to participate. Many of those teams brought great creativity to the lanes along with their bowling shoes; team names included, Snakes On A Lane, Bowltiviti, The Bowling Stones, and I Can’t Believe It’s Not Gutter.

Everyone had a great time and, at the end of the day, Michelle’s Minions came through as the winning team with a very impressive performance. Congratulations to them and thank you to everyone who came out to bowl!

Talented Protiviti Professionals

Last night at Arizona State University our very own Phoenix Consultant, David took recruiting to a new level.  While presenting to the CIS club, he proved that you can bring your whole self to work.  David who graduated from Arizona State University with a B.S. in Computer Information Systems in 2012 has been known throughout his career with Protiviti to have talents that not every consultant possess, but we all wish we did.

For instance David is a great dancer, and could have been seen at The Intern Challenge 2011 teaching his peers "How to Dougie." David also thanked the Phoenix office for a great summer by writing an original song about his internship experience in August 2011, where he capitalized on the opportunity to introduce his fellow interns.

David, has been a full-time consultant with Protiviti for a year and has once again taken us by storm by writing a Protiviti Jingle, which was performed live last night.

Thank you David for keep us all entertained.  Do you recall the last Protiviti Consultant who was also musically talented?
Left:  Lady Antebellum Band Member, Dave Haywood
Right:  Protiviti Phoenix Consultant, David
That's right who would have guessed that when Dave Haywood graduated from UGA and started a career with Protiviti in our Atlanta office as an IT Consultant, he is now a multi-platinum artist and member of a world renown group Lady Antebellum.  David we like you writing songs for Protiviti, and can not wait to see what your career has in store for you.

Happy Friday,
Casey Jo

One For One: Protiviti Lives Out Responsibility

Over the past few months, Protiviti has set-up an orientation and training hub in Phoenix, Arizona.  Since the middle of July we have on-boarded and trained almost 200 new consultants. At training we have placed an emphasis on introducing our employees to our eight core values:  proactiviti, productiviti, professionalism, qualiti, creativiti, integriti, objectiviti, and responsibiliti. I would like to take a moment to share with you how we have highlighted our core value of responsibiliti through our Day One evening social event.

Protiviti partnered with the Central Arizona Shelter Services (CASS) and TOMS to put on a TOMS teambuilding event. For over twenty-five years, CASS provides shelter and support services to nearly 10,000 of the Phoenix Valley's homeless each year.  In order to execute the event, Protiviti purchased over 100 pairs of TOMS shoes, supporting their mission of One For One.  The actual shoes were used during the event and subsequently donated to local Phoenix residents in need.

Photos captured at our various TOMS Team Building Nights
During the team building event, the consultants were divided into teams of ten.  They were then challenged to come up with a team name, brand, and marketing concept, as well as to decorate their shoes.  This is when the true consultant comes out of each of our new hires due to their internal competitive drive to win!

Left to Right:  Central Arizona Shelter Services Representative, Brenda; Protiviti Executive Vice President, Carol; and Protiviti Campus Recruiting Manager, Casey Jo
A panel of esteemed judges reviews each team's concept and pitch and ultimately selects the winner.  For the event last night, the panel included Protiviti Executive Vice President Carol Beaumier, CASS Representative Brenda, and yours truly!

Here's to living out our core values, starting on Day One!

Protiviti Celebrates Our Woman Leader in Consulting

Congratulations to Barbara Rothenstein, our Senior Vice President of Finance and Field Operations, who has been named to Consulting magazine’s 2013 Women Leaders in Consulting list! Barbara is recognized in the Leadership category, reflecting her exceptional abilities as the leader of Protiviti's operations team.

Consulting magazine will profile Barbara in its December edition (available online mid-December), and she and her fellow top women leaders will be honored at an awards dinner in November in New York, where Protiviti will sponsor a table to recognize Barbara for her achievement.

Barbara has been with Protiviti since our founding in 2002. During that time, she has led the operations team in building our infrastructure and support network for Protiviti offices worldwide. Her team works to streamline business processes, acquisition integration, office planning and management across our organization.

Barbara serves on Protiviti’s Diversity and Inclusion Steering Committee and leads our Sustainability Initiative, which focuses on environmental awareness and which kicked off an Acts of Green Program in North America earlier this year. Barbara is also active in non-profit causes in the New York area. She is a mentor to many Protiviti professionals and a role model for all of us.

Congratulations to Barbarafor this well-deserved recognition of all of her hard work and dedication!

Houston Habitat For Humanity

Early on a Saturday morning before the sun came up and the overachievers laced up their running shoes or mounted up on their road bikes, a group of 19 volunteers from Protiviti gathered to build a house for a deserving Houston family in partnership with Houston Habitat for Humanity. Armed with hammers, gloves, and hard hats, our motley crew started the day off hearing from families that will soon pay off a Habitat house or move in to one. It did not take long for our team to realize the impact our work would have on the future path for a local family.

Through a stroke of providence, Protiviti was paired to work on a house sponsored by Anheuser-Busch, we got along well with their build team. From 7:00 AM until 12:00 PM (with a Chick-fil-A break built-in of course), the team worked hard at the construction site. From installing hurricane clips to sheathing the outer walls with plywood, we worked diligently at our assigned tasks. While safety was the number one priority, you could not help but get a little nervous when the formerly demure consultant transformed into a trigger-happy nail-gun wielding machine. As with previous volunteer efforts, the Protiviti team impressed our Habitat build leaders with our speed and dedication.

When heavy rains cut off the last two hours of our planned build time, we were informed that we had already completed all of the build leaders’ goals for the day. While dodging the rain, our team got the chance to walk-through a nearly completed Habitat home. It was great to see the quality of homes that Habitat builds, and it was also a relief to know that the Habitat finishing crew could cover up what we lacked in carpentry and craftsmanship skills. As we walked back to our cars, the team was abuzz talking about how much we enjoyed the event. Protiviti’s contributions to Habitat did not end on Saturday though. Through RHI’s generous matching program Dollars for Doers, Protiviti Houston is targeting an additional matching gift for Houston Habitat of over $1,000 that will help Habitat to continue supporting Houston families. We hope to partner with Houston Habitat again in the future and continue giving back to our community.

Life of a Protiviti Returning Intern

Kevin Eiden, guest Protiviti Blogger, completed an internship in the IT Consulting practice over summer 2013.  Kevin will join the Chicago office in the summer of 2014 as a full time consultant.  Here, he shares with us some insight of what the life of a returning intern looks like as they finish up their schooling before joining us full time!

After my internship with Protiviti this summer, I was able to bring some really valuable skills to apply during my Information Systems graduate program at Indiana University. The project work I did during my internship gave me good perspective on what businesses really care about, and that experience paid off when I was selected to compete in the BMC Student Case Competition in Nashville, TN.

My two teammates and I competed against 7 other Information Systems and MBA programs on a business case that focused on IT Service Management. We were given two weeks to analyze the case, form recommendations and create a presentation. My experience with Protiviti not only helped my ability to analyze and solve IT-related business problems, but it also embedded in me an emphasis on business value in IT decisions. I believe what separated my team’s recommendations from the rest was our ability to link IT to the business and demonstrate both strong qualitative benefits and healthy return on investment. Our hard work earned us 2nd place in the competition!

Congratulations Kevin and IU MSIS team on this great accomplishment!

Protiviti has a strong emphasis on diversity and giving back to the community.   Recently, the non-profit organization I am involved with, Project by Project, was looking for corporate sponsors for our 15th Annual Plate by Plate Tasting Benefit.  I reached out to Chris Wright, the lead managing director for Protiviti's East region.  It didn’t take much to convince him that this was a perfect match for Protiviti’s Diversity and Inclusion initiative.  Not only did our firm provide monetary support, we also offered our conference room to Project by Project for its weekly meetings.

Project by Project is a national volunteer-based organization with chapters in New York, Los Angeles, and San Francisco. Each year, Project by Project partners with a different non-profit group and helps to raise money, raise awareness, and improve their outreach in the community. With a focus primarily in the Asian-American community, the 2013 “Plate by Plate” event was held on behalf of the Film News Now Foundation, a group centered around powerful and enlightening documentaries that bring to light both contributions and social injustices that affect Asian Americans. The event was hosted at 82Mercer on a Friday evening in October.

Our own senior consultant, Tara  Szczepanski, the reigning Miss Earth New York, was a special VIP guest at the event.  Other Protiviti professionals in attendance included Alex Cacanando (Senior Consultant), Amy Cho (Manager), Megan Colson (Operations Team Member), and Tracey Feldesman (Senior Consultant). Guests enjoyed "Smoked Yunnan Spiced Beef" from Yunnan Kitchen, Shigure’s "Roasted Duck” with pickled Oriental melon, Thalassa’s creamy and sweet “Lobster Pumpkin Bisque Kataifi," Yeba Buena Perry’s "Tacos De Costilla,"Edi and the Wolf’s “Lightly Torched Arctic Char,” refreshing drinks from Murray Hill haunt Middle Branch, Tito’s Handmade Vodka, Johnnie Walker, Bombay Sapphire, and even pours of VOSS Water to make sure we were well hydrated as the event progressed.

The event was a ton of fun and the cause, of course, was meaningful!  My takeaway from this experience: if you are interested in community service and diversity and inclusion, you can definitely find a place for them at Protiviti!

In honor of today's U.S. Veterans Day holiday, we would like to recognize and honor all of the brave men and women of the U.S.armed fores who have served our country and are serving today on behalf of our nation.  We would also like to pay tribute to Protiviti's veterans, and to our families with veterans.

We have many colleagues who have a military background or family connection.  We have taken a moment to have a few of our very own hero's and family members to share about their commitment to our country.

Tanya Trout
 Associate Director, Dallas

I have been with Protiviti since its start in 2002. Prior to Protiviti, I was a Signal Corps Officer in the 1st Cavalry Division at Fort Hood, Texas, and I continue to serve in the Texas Army National Guard. Protiviti has provided a natural fit for me to be able use the leadership, network operations management, and technical skills I received in the military and leverage these skills to provide project management and business process improvement support to clients. While maintaining my dual role has sometimes been challenging, it has allowed me to receive additional network operations and leadership training while gaining valuable on-the-job experiences during my two deployments in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom and Operation Enduring Freedom. I was recently selected for promotion to Lieutenant Colonel and continues to serve as the G6, Assistant Chief of Staff – Signal, for the 36th Infantry Division.

Curtis Jerzak
Senior Consultant, Minneapolis

I have been a member of the Minnesota Army National Guard for 14+ years. I’m currently a Captain managing the supply, maintenance, and ammunition functions for the 1st Battalion, 151st Field Artillery consisting of 600 Soldiers. The 1-151 FA Battalion has twelve M777 Howitzers, which fires rounds with a base of 155mm up to 30KM in distance. My next duty position will be a Battery Commander for a firing battery of 80 soldiers. I was deployed for State Active Duty in support of flood fights in April 2001 and July 2011. I also served two tours in support of OPERATION IRAQI FREEDOM; the first a 15-month deployment in 2004-05, and the second a 12-month deployment in 2009-10. After returning from the second deployment in 2010, I earned my Master of Accountancy degree from the Carlson School of Management at the University of Minnesota in May 2011 and started with Protiviti in July 2011. From my military training, time management and working under pressure has prepared me to be successful as a consultant for Protiviti.

Vince Dasta
Manager, Chicago

I graduated from Iowa State University in 2004 and earned a commission as an Ensign in the United States Navy through the NROTC program. As LT Dasta, my first assignment was as the Anti-Submarine Warfare Officer and Boarding Officer aboard the guided missile frigate USS ELROD (FFG-55) stationed in Norfolk, Virginia. While serving aboard USS ELROD I was deployed in support of Operation Active Endeavor in 2006 to combat piracy off the coast of Africa as well as various other missions in support of U.S. and NATO forces in the Mediterranean and Black Sea. After a successful tour aboard USS ELROD I transitioned to the Navy’s Expeditionary Combat Command and served as a platoon commander with RIVERINE SQUADRON THREE. During Operation Iraqi Freedom in 2008, I lead a detachment in direct support of Multi-National Forces Iraq and conducted over 100 combat patrols on the Euphrates River in Fallujah, Ramadi and throughout Al Anbar Province and was instrumental in securing the inland waterways for the people of Iraq. After transitioning to the civilian world I have been able to leverage many of the skills I acquired in the military such as the ability to quickly adapt to changing environments, leading a dynamic team, and managing mission critical programs and projects.

Anne Fejes (Fiancé is Serving)
Manager, Seattle

My fiancé, Norman Meckling, is an active service member in the United States Army. He is currently stationed at Joint Base Lewis-McChord with the 2nd Battalion, 75th Ranger Regiment. He has served on six deployments, one tour in Iraq and five tours in Afghanistan. He is a graduate of Army Ranger School, Airborne School, Pathfinder School, and Jumpmaster School, amongst others. During Norm’s regular deployments, work keeps me plenty busy so time passes by somewhat quickly. The biggest challenge we face during his deployments is taking care of our Siberian Husky, Bullet, who usually lives at Norm’s place while state-side, but lives with me when Norm’s away. When I’m on projects with out-of-town travel, I spend a lot of money on overnight boarding, but Bullet’s worth it!  With Protiviti’s presence across the world, if Norm’s career ever requires relocation, it’s great that it is more than likely that a Protiviti office will be nearby for me.

Jason Riddle
Senior Manager, Pittsburgh

I had the privilege to spend four years as an active duty Army officer leading IT teams in the field. During this time, I was responsible for establishing voice and data networks and supporting U.S. and international military units across Iraq. During my tenure with the military, I had the opportunity to learn who I was as an individual. The military reassured me of the fact that I loved a challenge, working with people, and tackling obstacles head on. Consulting allowed me to continue doing what I loved in the military, which was a main reason I chose to be a leader in Protiviti. Reflecting back on my career, I’ve been able to draw several parallels. Rather than consulting senior officers on communication practices and conducting risk assessments ensuring my teams reach Iraqi cities safely, I’m helping senior business leaders implement IT best practices and risk mitigation strategies. I appreciate the support Protiviti has provided our veterans over the years as well as the dedication and sacrifice our troops have made in keeping our country safe.

Tony Samer
Managing Director, San Francisco

I had the pleasure of serving for ten years as a U.S. Naval Aviator. I spent most of that time flying P-3 Orions out of places like Iceland, Sicily and Puerto Rico and as an instructor pilot in the Navy’s jet trainer, the T-45 Goshawk. Despite having made a decision to leave military service after ten years, I can honestly say I truly appreciated the opportunity to serve my country and do so in way that I found incredibly challenging and rewarding. Given the chance, I’d do it all the same way again, not least of all because of the valuable life and career lessons my service offered. I have no doubt that the experience I gained leading aircrews and departments, making critical decisions with imperfect information, and dealing with the unexpected at such an early stage in my career has paid dividends many times over. Perhaps most importantly, my service during relatively peaceful times and not exactly on the pointy edge of the spear firmly rooted my appreciation for our colleagues and the millions of other men and women who have in fact put their lives on the line in service to our country.

Thank you for your service!

'Tis the Season to Give Back!

“It’s the most wonderful time of the year” is ringing true here in the Dallas, TX office! A decorated Christmas tree, colorful nutcrackers, and an electronic countdown to Christmas sign are just a few of the many holiday pieces that creative a festive atmosphere in our office.   Although this is a time when many of us are hustling and bustling to finish projects and prepare ourselves for the next year, the Dallas Protiviti office has made it a priority to spend time helping those who are less fortunate in our neighborhood.

A group of us went to Wynnewood Community Service Center, in south Dallas, to tutor and make gingerbread houses with children from the area.  Half the fun was watching the kids sneakily eat the decorative candy while creating their gingerbread house!  My group couldn’t get the foundation strong enough, so we opted to have a gingerbread tepee instead!

Chase Johnson put together the “12 Bars of Christmas” pub crawl that benefited Toys for Tots!  Everyone who participated (around 100 people!) proudly wore their tacky sweater, and donated either money or a toy the charity!

Santa “aka. Russ Collins” also made an appearance at our Family Holiday Party!  Cheesy holiday jokes, face painting, crafts, and cookies brought joy to the children and parents in our Dallas office! Do you think Richard Williams was naughty or nice this year?!

Protiviti offices all throughout the world have been sharing the holiday spirit with the less fortunate in some way or another. The Chicago office even braved the coldest day of the year to ring the Salvation Army bells!  I hope that you have a wonderful holiday season and take time to help someone in need in your hometown!
Happy Holidays!

The San Francisco Protiviti office hosted the Hispanic Business Student Association from the University of Texas, Austin on Wednesday, January 8th. During their annual "company field trip", the group of 21 students toured the Protiviti office, met with Protiviti consultants and learned more about a career in consulting. The students were also able to learn more about Protiviti’s company culture including our commitment to teamwork, collaboration, quality and diversity and inclusion. The entire visit was summarized by HBSA’s Professional Development Chair, Maria Rivera, “I had a chance to interact with Protiviti employees and really ask in detail about their career at the firm. With first-hand experience, their anecdotes were very relevant to me as a college student. One important take away for me was the high level of approachability that each and every one of the Protiviti employees showed to our group. We felt extremely welcomed at the office. They even had little Protiviti lunchboxes waiting for us!"

Spring 2014 Recruiting Season Kicks Off!

$

It’s that time of year again…A recruiter’s favorite time of the year…Campus Recruiting season!  While many students on campus are getting geared up for their spring semester, here at Protiviti we are anxiously awaiting the variety of opportunities to meet and network with students on campuses all across the nation.  We recommend that students prepare themselves before they meet with employers at student organization presentations, campus-wide career fairs, and other recruitment events.

1.       Bring a Resume–Even if the event is more casual, it never hurts to come prepared with a few copies of your resume. The company may be collecting them, and it allows you to make connection with someone.  Make sure to swing by your career center and ask them about opportunities to have your resume critiqued beforehand.  They can help you with everything from formatting, to choosing content, and making sure your resume stands out in the crowd!

2.       Ask Questions – The general ones are great, like “day in the life”, etc., but if you have a few companies you are particularly interested in, do some research!  There may be something in the news regarding their company, or something more specific about a practice they have that you can dig into, and those unique questions will show your interest in the firm.

3.       Dress to Impress – Sometimes recruiting events only allow for a few minutes of face time with employers.  Make sure to dress and act professionally so that you leave them with a lasting impression!

4.       Ask for a Card – and use it!  Follow up with recruiters and other representatives after the event.  While we do our very best to remember every face we meet, it is always nice to have a quick reminder of the conversation we had with you and also reinforces your interest in the company!

5.       Be yourself – These events can be a bit overwhelming, but it is important to try to let your personality shine through!  You want to end up at a company that is a fit for who you are, and vice versa, so let us know a little about what is important to you!

To all those heading out to campus recruiting events over the next few months, good luck!  We hope to see you at a Protiviti event soon!
