It's been another successful year at Disney World for The Intern Challenge.  As we close out the week by setting goals for the remainder of the internship, we wish our team the best of luck as they return to their home offices to begin client work on Monday!  Until next year, Orlando!

Insight on Intern Life...Part One

Every year at the beginning of the Intern Program, a common question we get is “What will I do during the internship?”  Over the next few weeks, we hope to show you just that! In addition to working on engaging and interesting client work, Protiviti interns have a chance to network with their peers and leadership, help the community and have some fun! Below is an insider view of intern life at Protiviti thus far.
Week #1: We kicked off the internship in offices around the country with orientation.
The calm before the storm in the Atlanta office on Day #1!

Former intern Stewart passed along his knowledge to the new class of interns!

Week #2: We flew from all over the country to gather as a group for The Intern Challenge in Orlando, FL. It was a great week of learning, networking, fun events, food and more food!

General session room where we met as a group every morning to start our day.

A team photo during the salsa competition event. Can you spot Joe, Protiviti's CEO?

A mid-morning snack. It never fails...breakfast burritos are always a hit!

The Atlanta, DC, Baltimore, Richmond, Tampa, Orlando & Ft. Lauderdale interns with their recruiters at the annual 'Tiv Awards.

Week #3: This week was the first week back in the office after The Intern Challenge and the first few days of client work. Offices around the country welcomed our interns with happy hours, lunches, community service and team building events.

The Atlanta Interns were welcomed with a lunch.

The Metro DC interns did not waste any time before helping out their community and spent the day preparing food for families involved in the Ronald McDonald House. They finished up the day with a happy hour.

As you can see, in just three short weeks the Protiviti interns have already made a great impact on our firm and in our communities. We just can't wait to see what they will do next!

My Annual Trip to Disney World

Carol with her winning Sultans of Sauce team, 2013

For the last four years, I have traveled to Orlando every June for what is always one of my most memorable weeks of the year.  Before you conclude that I am a big fan of theme parks, I should add that I actually have never been on the grounds of any of the parks.  What brings me to Orlando every year is Protiviti’s Intern Challenge – a weeklong orientation, held adjacent to Downtown Disney, for the elite college students selected for internships at Protiviti offices across the United States.

The Intern Challenge is the first week of an 8-week internship program designed to give the participating students the foundation they need to be successful not only during their internships with Protiviti, but also in their future careers. The Challenge is built around a series of business simulations and role plays that immerse the students into real world business situations.  It also includes meetings, small group discussions, and social activities with Protiviti's leadership team – that’s where I come in; I am a member of Protiviti’s executive management team.

Over the course of the four years, I have met the most amazing young people.   I marvel at their confidence and poise and I am energized by their enthusiasm and eagerness to learn new things.  And, the learning is far from one-sided.  Among other things, the interns have opened my eyes to social issues – one young woman a few years ago recommended that I read Half the Sky and I was very affected by the tales of human rights oppression of women and children around the globe – and, I hope, have taught me a little about what is important to the Millennial generation.

I enjoy sharing my career history with them and am especially delighted when someone comes up to me to tell me she or he is “so happy to hear that a liberal arts major can make it in the business world” or “thinks advising clients on regulatory compliance sounds really interesting.”   I also enjoy the one-on-one conversations that take place at the social events and always like participating in the annual teambuilding event we call the “Salsa Challenge. “   I’d like to say that the teambuilding event is not about who wins or loses, but I think a little healthy competition can be a good thing and I was quite pleased this year (thank you again, Team 3) when my team won the “Sultan of Sauce” award.

Once orientation is over and the interns disperse to their assigned offices, I have had the pleasure of being an adviser to several and having others work on my client projects.  I enjoy the daily interaction and being able to share with these interns some of the soft skills and technical knowledge that are important to consulting.  I also share in the experiences of the entire intern class by following their blogs, which are usually very entertaining accounts of their lives in the consulting world.

At the end of the internship comes the job offers for those individuals whom we want to join the firm.  If we have done a good job at campus recruiting – and our Campus Recruiting team is expert at this – most of the interns will receive, and we hope will accept, an offer.  Then, it’s back to college for senior year. For the interns, this means knowing with certainty that an exciting and challenging job awaits.  For Protiviti, it means that we have begun the process of developing the next generation of consultants who will help our clients identify and solve their critical business problems.

Campus Recruiters' "Best of" List

June and July have been very busy months for the Campus Recruiting team. The summer interns started in mid-June and our new consultants will join us in just a few short weeks at the Consultant Challenge. To welcome, re-welcome and reintroduce our newest employees to the cities they will live and work in, our campus recruiters have shared their favorite local places.

We hope you enjoy exploring the cities that we love!

Protiviti Campus Recruiters’ “Best of”List

Foodie’s Favorite (Your campus recruiter’s favorite restaurant, food truck or greasy spoon)

Denver - Chipotle, the first Chipotle!

Atlanta - Seven Lamps: The off-menu burger is the best burger in Atlanta.

Seattle– You must visit Paseo and grab a bite of their fantastic Caribbean sandwiches. They’ve been featured on The Food Network and were on Esquire Magazine’s list of “Best Sandwiches in America”.

Houston - El Tiempo for authentic Tex-Mex, Max’s for a nice dining experience, and Hickory Hollow for some true blue Texas Barbeque.

Cool Kid’s Hang Out (Your campus recruiter’s favorite place to see and be seen)

New York– The Bronx Zoo

Los Angeles - Runyon Canyon

Dallas - Top Golf is a Dallas office favorite! It’s a revolutionary sports entertainment complex combining games with great food and an environment you can enjoy year-round. Top Golf features computerized micro-chips in every golf ball that track your shots’ accuracy and distance while awarding points for hitting targets ranging from 20 - 250 yards away.

Phoenix - The Lodge in Old Town, this cabin themed bar makes you wish you could go to the mountains and escape the summer heat. It is a more comfortable atmosphere than most other bars in Old Town Scottsdale and provides a fun environment to shoot some pool, play a game of bags, or just enjoy good food and conversation with good friends.

Let’s Get Physical (Your campus recruiter’s favorite active venue)

Chicago - The Lakefront trail, hands down.

Dallas - The Katy Trail is a great place to not only get exercise, but also catch up with friends. It is pretty common to grab a drink at the Ice House afterwards!

Seattle – Play a few games of Whirleyball –a team game where you ride in bumper cars and shoot wiffle balls into a basket.

San Francisco– The bike ride from Pier 39 or the Ferry Building, through Fisherman’s Wharf, over the Golden Gate Bridge, to Sausalito or Tiburon is a tourist favorite as well as a local’s favorite. Bike to Sausalito for a scenic 8 mile ride or take it up a notch and ride 21 miles to Tiburon. There are ferries back to the city from each location.

The Great Outdoors (Your campus recruiter’s favorite outdoor space)

Chicago - The Lincoln Park Zoo – It’s free!

New York - Bear Mountain 45 minutes north of the city . It is a great hike!

Denver - Ski Resorts : Vail, Beaver Creek, Copper Mountain, Winter Park, Keystone… the list goes on, and they are all within 2 hours of metro Denver!

San Francisco– Stow Lake in Golden Gate Park. It’s in the middle of Golden Gate Park. There are running trails that go around it and an island in a middle of the lake connected by a stone bridge. Rent a paddle boat and swim amongst the geese and ducks. Check out the “Pathtiviti”walking trail recently created by the San Francisco Protiviti interns!

Hidden Gem (A place that only a local would know about)

Atlanta– Highlands, Buckhead

Los Angeles– Carnitas Michoacan, yummy nachos!

Houston– Last Concert Café will have you guessing if you have arrived because there is no sign and you have to knock on the front door to gain entrance; however, this Mexican themed restaurant and jammy live music will keep you entertained for hours.

Phoenix - Scottsdale Civic Center Park, many local events are held here over the weekends such as the Culinary Festival in May and the Christmas Tree Lighting in December. There are not as many events held over the summer due to the weather, but it is a nice location to enjoy an evening picnic (permitting cooler weather) or just walk around and view some local artwork.

"Work Appropriate" Debunked

Tonight marks the eve of Protiviti’s first Consulting Challenge training, which kicks off tomorrow in Phoenix, AZ.  This new training program is targeted specifically for our entry level hires, many of whom recently graduated and will be starting their first professional employment experience with Protiviti!

One of the first tasks for our new hires will be to upload a work-appropriate picture to their profiles on our internal knowledge-sharing site.  This will help our team members to put a face to the name for each of our new employees and to welcome them into the Protiviti community.

In our experience as campus recruiters, we have found that it can be difficult at times for our campus hires to interpret the meaning of “work-appropriate.”  To assist them and our broader student audience in learning this important term, we are providing some examples of what to do (and what not to do) when selecting a work-appropriate picture.

Exhibit A– Do not accidentally take a pants shot.

Exhibit B– Do not make a funny face.

Exhibit C– C is for clothing; adhere to the dress code (ours does not allow sleeveless shirts).

Exhibit D– A profile picture seated in a chair with a ridiculously tall back is not recommended.  (P.S., polka dotted denim most definitely not in the dress code).

Exhibit E– School spirit is encouraged, but not in a work-appropriate profile picture.  And sidenote, your work-appropriate profile picture should not include a friend.

Exhibit F– As in Finally! A work-appropriate picture!  Thanks to Casey Jo for showing us how it’s done.

Keep these tips in mind as you get started creating your professional identity, and you will be off to a good start!  We look forward to seeing all of our new hires and their smiling work-appropriate faces tomorrow.

What do you get when you mix Texas heat, a concert at the Dallas Arboretum, after work happy hours, a 5K race, and an upcoming Top Golf outing?  That's right, summertime at the Dallas Protiviti Office!  We have been having a blast getting to know our Interns over the past month and continue to be amazed at how well they are doing!  Take a peek at a few of the Dallas happenings we have had so far this summer!

Jared, Chase, Nick, Todd, and I ran the Too Hot To Handle 5K this past weekend at White Rock Lake.  We decided to start a running group in the Dallas office called iRun!  Every month we will encourage our whole office to participate in running or walking a 5K!  By the way, Nick dominated and beat us all!

Last week we were all able to relax in the air conditioning and enjoy a happy hour at The Social House!  Here are a few of our hardworking interns embracing some time away from the office!

Have a great rest of your week and make sure to continue to be involved in as many Protiviti outings as you can!

As we approach the beginning of the end of the 2013 Intern Program, it is always fun to check in with interns across the country to hear about their experiences as Protiviti Interns. Somehow in the midst of challenging client work they were able to network with their peers and co-workers quite a bit!
The Atlanta Interns enjoyed a Braves game with their Peer Advisors and other staff.

The Metro DC Interns spent quality time up in the air on rollercoasters at Six Flags with their Peer Advisors & Wonder Woman!

Then Orlando interns raced to the finish line in go-carts with their Advisors and helped out their community at a local food bank.

The Ft. Lauderdale interns have found time to enjoy the sunshine and play some golf!

The Tampa Intern cheered on the Rays at a baseball game.

Until next time,

Today was the last day of the internship for many of our interns.  It's seems like it was just yesterday when I was blogging about how I couldn't wait for the internship program (Can't Wait for the Internship Program!) and now the last day is here!  Although I couldn't physically be in the office today to bid our LA interns farewell, I couldn't help but to reminisce about our awesome summer with all of our interns!

Like I mentioned before, the interns definitely brought up our energy level, which I think really helps us as we are heading into a little bit busier of a period.  Now we can cherish and appreciate all of our wonderful memories of The Intern Challenge, office intern events, and the opportunity we had to watch our interns learn and grow!

Protiviti Interns - we miss you already!  We hope you had a fun and productive summer with us.  Best of luck as you head back to school for your final year!  You have all done a great job on all of your projects and have impressed us with your wealth of knowledge and ability to learn so much in a short period.  You have all certainly left us fully inspired!
