Today, Protiviti is celebrating Earth Day around the globe.  CEO, Joe Tarantino sent an internal message to our organization informing us of a challenge that is underway for our firm.  Our global goal is to reach 2,013 Acts of Green by December 31, 2013.

Here's what our employees are doing to help kick start reaching our goal:

Houston Senior Consultant, Will:  "...Protiviti re-usable shopping bag! Looking forward to using (it) over and over at the store."

New York Consultant, Danielle:  "My Act of Green is to use a reusable lunch bag instead of a brown paper one each day."

Seattle Managing Director, Linda: "...turn off the tap while brushing my teeth!"
Charlotte Assistant, Kaitlyn:  "My Act of Green is to walk to work each day instead of driving. Great exercise!"
Chicago Senior Consultant, Ahmed:  "I drive a Jetta clean diesel, ave mpg 37.4."

New York Manager, Melinda:  "I have replaced all my plastic food containers with glass ones."

Kansas City Director, Gordon:  "I spent this morning with other volunteers helping to plant an edible classroom and community garden at the soon to be refurbished Hale Cook Elementary school in Kansas City, MO. The garden will be jointly maintained by the school and the community and its harvest will be shared with nearby Gillis House - a safe place for boys with troubled backgrounds."

And of course, our Charlotte based Campus Recruiter, Bridget:  "My act of green is to carpool to work with Brittany."

Campus Recruiter, Brittany reporting for carpool duty!
What are you doing today to help the Earth?  I am recycling documents that I no longer need in my new recycle trashcan below my desk.  Every little bit helps and we are excited that Protiviti is doing a part to protect the Earth for the next generation of employees.

Springtime & Scholarships

We sure have been loving the spring weather down in the South this month! Along with the sunshine & excessive pollen, we have enjoyed our trips to campus to celebrate our favorite people...the students!

Recently, two Protiviti consultants from Atlanta, Will & Daniel, ventured to Athens, GA to attend the Spring 2013 meeting of The University of Georgia's Management Information Systems Advisory Board. While at this event, Will and Daniel not only found time to  discuss the current needs in the workforce and the desired skills employers seek, but also managed to share tips and advice for those students gearing up for the recruiting process this Fall.

Will and Daniel had a great time, but their favorite part of this event was giving out two Protiviti scholarships to MIS students with excellent academic standing and leadership experience. The event was valuable both to Protiviti and to the students and we look forward to attending again next Spring.

 Until next time,

I think I speak for all of the recruiters and everyone at Protiviti when I say that I’m very excited for the next Intern class to start this summer!  We’ve all been working very hard to prepare for our Interns and the energy level is up across all of our offices!  I find it so interesting how we all just lighten up and we all get a little boost of energy when students join us as interns and new hires.  So, for all of you juniors out there who are getting excited for your internships this summer, know that the companies you are joining are as thrilled to have you there.

Here are my personal top 5 reasons of why I love the Protiviti Internship Program:

5. I get to attend our National Intern Challenge at Walt Disney World!  I love having the opportunity to meet all of the interns and of course, reuniting with my fellow lovely recruiters from other offices!

4. I get to work with closely with our interns and help them transition from “school life” to “work life” as they are going through the entire 8-week program.
3. I truly enjoy learning more and more each year from each group of interns that join us.  With each intern class, I’ve learned about different students’ perspectives and what Protiviti does/can do to help the interns to be successful (in the internship, but also in their careers).

2. I cannot lie…some of the things I genuinely get excited about each year are the yummy breakfast burritos and snacks we get during the Intern Challenge!  :)

1. I get to see all of the interns learn, grow, and develop on a personal and a professional level and watch them succeed!

Can’t wait until June 13th!

This is Protiviti Houston's THIRD year to participate as a Bronze Corporate Sponsor for Special Olympics Texas, and we continued to do a great job volunteering at the games, cheering on the athletes, and impressing Special Olympics organization with our volunteer efforts. We had over 35 volunteers including our friends at Robert Half and family members participate in this years event on Saturday, May 11th.

It was a humbling experience overall; we got to be part of such an exciting day for the athletes. For some, this year’s highlights also included meeting the Houston Texans linebacker Brian Cushing. Additionally, as it so turns out, many of our volunteers had their celebrity cameo appearances on this past Saturday nights ABC 13 local news. Having just watched it, congratulations to Manager, Eric who wins the honors for the most airtime.

My name is Jillian Nyberg and I am the new Central Region Campus Recruiter!  Here is my inaugural blog post. Expect to see some more from me during my career at Protiviti!

Starting a new job can be daunting, exciting, and nerve-racking all at the same time.  I can honestly say that my first few weeks at Protiviti have beennothing but fun!  I was welcomed the moment I stepped on the 11th floor of the Oxy Building, and felt like I had been on the Dallas Protiviti team for years. I was given a tour of the office and noticed right away that the people who worked for Protiviti were outgoing and humorous, but also worked hard.  I am going on my third week of working at Protiviti, and have already experienced a number of office events that make this company different from many others!

It all started on my first day whena group of team members took me out to lunch to welcome me to the team! The next week I got to attend my first Town Hall meeting. During this meeting the members of the Dallas office got togetherto review Protiviti’s financial set goals, reward those who have performed well over the past few months, and listen to Nancy Pechloff, Central Region Managing Director, share her background onhow she became a part of the Protiviti family.  After the Town Hall meeting,we all participated in a Bowl-A-Thon to raise money forJunior Achievement!  We allenjoyed catching up with co-workers, eating, drinking, and attempting to rule the sport of bowling!  There was also a costume competition and the Ninja Turtle group won by a long shot!

The next big event that I am counting down the days until is the Intern Challenge in Orlando, FL! I’mreally looking forward to meeting the Interns and other current Protiviti employees who make this company an enjoyable and exciting place to work at!

Support the Troops- New York Office

With the Memorial Day holiday weekend past us, I am very happy to report that last week Protiviti NY personnel packed 61 boxes which were then sent for distribution c/o six of our military members serving overseas. Three of the six service members were actually contacts from our own Protiviti family.  Thanks to your generous donations, all of the troops selected will be receiving at least two care packages each.

The response to this event was very gratifying – from the continued support of those who have participated in years past to our new hires who gladly pitched in-  in their first week here!  The Community Service Team would like to thank everyone for their generosity in making this event a success -- everyone who donated cash or items the troops requested, our planning team, our purchasing team, our packing teams, our shipping teams, and those who took a few minutes to write postcards that mean so much to our troops.

If you did not participate in this event, it is never too late to help our troops.  The following are some websites that offer different options:Read our troops’ stories, select a soldier here, request the address and mail him or her a card:

You can volunteer here; send a letter; or even send a stuffed animal to a military child:

Wounded Warrior Project has volunteer program and you can also thank a wounded warrior:

The USO offers a variety of volunteer opportunities:

But, we are not done yet. Protiviti Boston will be packing this Tuesday, May 28th, and will increase our box count for 2013.   Let’s go, Boston!

Welcome to your new job!

Starting a new job is an exciting time in anyone’s life.  It’s like your first day at school – full of excitement about who you will meet, what you will do, how you’ll be challenged and what you will accomplish. However that excitement can come with a little trepidation – am I saying the right things? Am I wearing the right clothes? Will people like me? Find me smart, friendly, enthusiastic? As an intern, you might be asking yourself these questions, especially if this internship is your very first job; however the same questions arise even when you have many years of work experience.
I started at Protiviti just one month ago so I understand exactly how you feel.  As a new hire, I’ve experienced the same excitement but also nervousness around what to do and say as I acclimate to a new workplace. Below are a few tips that I follow to help me ease into a new work environment, build new relationships and contribute to the team.
  1. Be friendly – It sounds simple and it is! Be open to meeting new people, sharing information about yourself, getting to know your new coworkers and opening up to share your knowledge. A smile and earnest interest in others goes a long way in making a great first impression.
  2. Be open to learning new things – This one is a particular favorite of mine. I am super curious and I love to learn. Your new work environment is full of new information and friendly people willing to teach, mentor and coach you. So enjoy, that’s what an internship is all about, exploring, learning and having new experiences.
  3. Be yourself – Your experiences, knowledge and personality are unique and contribute to the diversity of your new workplace. Be confident in who you are and what you bring to the table. Everyone is excited that you’re on the team.
Enjoy your internship!

Intern Inspiration

Happy Intern Eve to one and all!

At Protiviti, we talk a lot about inspiration.  It is actually the key concept in our recruiting tagline: “What Inspires You Inspires Us.”

The idea behind this is that we believe that people who build careers with Protiviti draw inspiration from within the organization as well as from their personal lives and the community.  All of this inspiration feeds into the success that we have achieved together in the last 11 years.  We want to provide relationships and work experiences that inspire our people; innovative solutions that inspire our clients; and we want to be inspired every day by the world around us.

But getting back to the moment in question – today is Intern Eve!  The 2013 Intern Program kicks off bright and early tomorrow, with interns attending orientation in offices across the country.  Each year I am amazed by the way that our team rallies together around the intern program.  Everywhere I look, I find examples of this:

  • Our company leaders doing everything they can to be involved, from the entire executive team (including our CEO) attending The Intern Challenge next week, to local office leadership participating as executive advisors to our interns throughout the summer.
  • Our management team partnering with talent management to ensure meaningful client work for each and every intern across our solutions and offices.
  • Our Intern Challenge facilitation team devoting an entire week to setting our interns up for success, flying to Orlando from client locations around the world (literally – one gets in on an intercontinental flight and goes straight to the training session).
  • Our campus recruiters – you know who they are – working for months to put together a best-in-class program, integrating all aspects of a quality experience, taking into account best practices and feedback from campuses across the U.S.

All the activity creates a buzz at this time of year, an energy that is unmistakable – and it culminates on a day like today.

So what inspires YOU?  Well, hopefully the internship -- because it sure inspires us.

Best of luck to our 2013 Intern Class and to all the interns putting themselves out there this summer!
--Bridget

Last night we had our annual Sultan of Sauce contest, which due to the weather we had to move inside.  The weather did not stop the competition though.  All teams simmered, chopped, and stirred their salsas in an intense competition.

There were then some killer presentations to help convince the crowds to vote for their teams.  Many members of our Executive Team made a few cameo's in certain marketing pitches.

The interns participated in quite a variety of activities this afternoon!  They mastered the art of sandwich creation (pictured above) and also honed their client interview skills, along with polishing their Microsoft Visio skills.  Up next, we will have an opportunity to hear from Protiviti's Executive Vice President of Global Internal Audit, Brian Christensen, as he talks to the group about Client Promises.

Protiviti interns will never go hungry at The Intern Challenge!  Today, the interns enjoyed tasty soft pretzels and funnel cakes, and that is just a sample of the variety of snacks provided to the team to keep their energy up.  Breakfast burritos (pictured below) are always a big hit as well.
