Carving Out A Name For Ourselves

The proud artists with their carvings.

The IT Consulting team in Houston held a pumpkin-carving contest last night at a local establishment.  Their artistry showcases one of my favorite core values of the Protiviti culture: Creativiti.

While I was not by any means a judge for the competition, clearly my vote goes to the Protiviti pumpkin as a ghoulish interpretation of our brand.

 Which pumpkin gets your vote?

Happy Halloween,

The Choice Is Yours

Decisions, decisions.  On Election Day, there is a lot of focus on this topic.  Similarly, at this point in the recruiting season, many students are making decisions of a different nature, such as where to begin their careers after graduation.  Needless to say, I couldn’t let today slip by without taking advantage of the metaphor at hand.

Deciding on your employer is a lot like placing your vote during an election.  Below are my top five reasons why that is the case, as well as my advice on how to approach each item.

1) Know the issues.
Like every political candidate running for office, there are differences in every employment opportunity available to you.  It is essential to understand those differences and to base your decision on the things that matter most to you (training, compensation, culture, type of work, free lunches, whatever else may come into play).

2) Focus on reality, not rhetoric.
Just like in politics, every employer has a slogan or a party line that you can find in marketing materials, on the website, and in other types of branding approaches. Make sure that these messages align with the information that you get from conversations with real employees and their actual experiences within the organization.

3) Avoid group think.
Your friends are all making big decisions as well, and like politics, it can be difficult to separate their views from your own. Above all else, be true to yourself with the choices that you make.

4) Location, location, location.
Every election has critical states that candidates and the media tend to focus on – As an Ohio native, I know this well.  Similarly, location weighs heavily into your decision on employment. Choose to start your career in a place that feels like home to you.

5) Time is on your side.
I know that this decision can feel like you are swaying the course of your entire life, and certainly it is an influential one.  Having said that, just like a presidential election, your choice most directly impacts your life over the next few years.  You never know where your career will take you in the long term, no matter where you start.

At the end of the day, it is most important to be excited about every decision that you make, whether it is of the political or professional variety.  So once you make your selection, make sure that you display it with pride!

Houston Rises To The Top

Houston is excited to share that on November 11, 2012 the Houston Chronicle published the 2012 Top Work Places list and Protiviti was a member. The digital publication can be found here, where Protiviti graces page 31.  The award is determined by employee surveys conducted by Workplace Dynamics that collects information in such areas as opportunities for advancement, the value of their pay and benefits, and leadership communication and management skills.

One of Protiviti's cornerstones is Best People and Culture, the local office leaders who help lead various activities to engage and connect employees were invited to attend an awards gala.  The group happened to share the below picture of Protiviti on the red carpet where they had the pleasure of posing with Justin Bieber.

Motiviti Takes Movember

$

The month of November is beginning to be known as Movember across the globe, and that is not an exception here at Protiviti.  In 2003, 30 individuals in Melbourne, Australia began a movement to change the face of men's health and it has grown to have almost 900,000 participants annually.  Many of our consultants across the globe embraced the Movember movement this year to help raise vital awareness and funds for men's health, specifically prostate and testicular cancer initiatives.  Men's health and awareness is often something that goes overlooked as it can be underpublicized. Movember is so unique and innovative that it counteracts that perception with the definition of macho: a mustache.

To highlight the importance of what Movember is and why people participate here at Protiviti, let's take a look at these statistics:
  • 1 in 6 men will be diagnosed with prostate cancer in their lifetime.
  • This year 242,000 new cases of prostate cancer will be diagnosed.
  • This year 8,290 men will be diagnosed with testicular cancer.
Let's meet our Protiviti Mo Bros and understand why these passionate Protiviti employees were moved to participate in Movember for 2012.

Houston, Texas Senior Manager, Eric:
"The reason I support Movember is that I hadn’t spoken with my father for four years prior to his death – long story that I won’t trouble you with – and if my father had sought help for his apparent illness and had the issue diagnosed, not only might he have extended his life, but I also hope that we would have communicated again."
Ft. Lauderdale, Florida Manager, Joe:
"A mustache is not a facial hair style that is typically worn by the 20-30 age group so, in
growing something that is uncharacteristic, you are inherently approached by people
with questions. This is an opportunity to explain the program as well as get the word
out on men’s health. Essentially you become a walking billboard.

I think this is a great cause and am happy to participate. In addition, RHI offers a gift
matching program where they match a percentage of all the money raised through the
           program."
Frankfurt, Germany Manager, Mathias:
"My team MoPros for Germany came in contact with Movember last year during a
project in Barclaycard Germany.  Lots of people were doing it and we found this a way
to do something quite interesting and also fun.  This year we decided to participate
on our own. We liked the idea of doing something positive for a specifically male
cancer problem and we liked the idea of how this is supported. Having said that, we
are enjoying ourselves wearing our moustaches with pride, answering questions
             that obviously came from others."

And a few more Mo Bros:

Los Angeles, California Consultant, Avery:                                                                New York, New York Consultant, Scott:

Way to go "Bros" -- know that Protiviti is proud of the cause that you have chosen to support!

Our New York Office collected a record breaking eighteen hundred pounds of food this year to donate to City Harvest. Two free turkeys that were earned by our shoppers are making their way down to St. Paul’s House again this year, as well as over three cases of fruit in glass containers.

In addition this year, we were notified that generous online donations were made as well, and Protiviti was able to help feed:  17 New Yorkers for over 4 months help; 7 seniors for nearly a year; and will rescue 2,240 pounds of food or help feed 320 children for a whole week.

2012 Atlanta Community Food Bank Food Drive

Work room in Protiviti Office filled with canned items
For the fifth year in a row, The Atlanta Protiviti office held an office food drive benefiting the Atlanta Community Food Bank, which provides food for the less fortunate in the Atlanta area. New neighbor, Robert Half, was invited to participate in some friendly interoffice competition. The office was organized into two teams, Robert Half vs Protiviti, whose goal it was to collect the most non-perishable food items. The teams earn one point for each food item collected, however, an extra point was awarded for high demand food donations which included: Peanut Butter; Canned Tuna; Canned Beans; Canned Soups, Stews and Pastas; 100% Fruit Juice; Canned Fruits and Vegetables; Macaroni and Cheese Dinners; and Whole Grain, Low Sugar Cereals.

This year’s competition was held October 31 through November 16. A total of 8,114 items were collected from both teams, most of which were high demand items. Protiviti won in a landslide victory by collecting over $4,025.00 to purchase 7,149 items (13,765 points) compared to 965 items (1930 points) collected by Robert Half. The winning team enjoyed watching the losing team sing and dance to “Gangnam Style” prior participating in a combined office Happy Hour. The good sportsmanship of the losing team was very much appreciated! Protiviti has been forewarned for next year – it will be a much different competition.
Robert Half dancing Gangnam style!
Even though less items were donated than the previous year (10,593 in 2011), this year’s focus was on collecting larger family size items which were more beneficial to families.

Another successful food drive benefiting the Atlanta community and building camaraderie between Robert Half and Protiviti.

Orlando Puts A Cultural Spin On The Holidays

The Orlando Protiviti office celebrated their holiday party at a very creative and cultured restaurant known as Café Tu Tu Tango. When guests arrived to the party on Saturday, December 1st, they were welcomed into a beautiful outside patio to mingle, enjoy delicious hors d'oeuvres and they had an opportunity to get a drawing by a caricature artist. Following the mingle hour was a tapas served dinner where tables of 8 or more enjoyed delicious flat bread, steak skewers, dynamite shrimp and much more!

After dinner we had a performance by an African Dance & Drum Tribal who chose a couple lucky ones to join them in dancing to the beat! We then wrapped up our evening with a fun filled Trivia game highlighting our Management Team. The game consisted of 27 questions - facts voluntarily provided by the management team - for the rest of the staff to guess who said/did what. In the end, there were 7 winners who received a prize of a $25-$100 gift card to the restaurant.

Our holiday party was a great success and we can not wait for our next gathering!

In honor of Texas A&M University Day, we are doing something out of the norm and posting about one of our core campus recruiting schools.  Protiviti is proud to have established relationships with many top schools across the U.S. as part of our entry-level hiring program.  We appreciate that every school comes with its unique culture, and we enjoy taking time to celebrate their traditions.

Twelve is a number rich in meaning for Texas A&M University in College Station, Texas, as it symbolizes one of the university’s most defining and historic traditions: the 12th Man. And on December. 12, 2012, (12-12-12), Aggies everywhere will have a once in a lifetime moment to share this unique tradition with the world.  Protiviti is helping the celebration by playing the war hymn at 12:12pm today in their two Texas offices, Dallas and Houston respectively.

Protiviti is also deep in tradition when in comes to hiring people who are passionate about their careers.  We are actively looking for our own "Johnny Consultants."

Congratulations to Texas A&M University Quarterback and 2012 Heisman Trophy Winner, Johnny Manziel
What are some of your favorite traditions at your college or university?

The Tampa Protiviti office was in a giving spirit this holiday season!

Our office participated in the Salvation Army Angel’s annual Angel Tree Program to provide Christmas gifts for less fortunate children in the Tampa area. This year, we adopted 34 children, and 8 lucky kids got their requests for new bikes fulfilled. Once all the gifts were gathered, it was a team effort to get them delivered to the Salvation Army headquarters, as you can see by the pictures. I was very impressed by the generosity of our office, and it was a rewarding experience to help give these kids a brighter Christmas.

San Francisco Supports Upwardly Global

San Francisco Office Participants:  Consultant Kyle, Consultant Rikinder, Consultant Bobbi, Associate Director Sundar, Consultant Brandon, Senior Consultant Stacy, and Consultant Ryan

The San Francisco office held a presentation by Upwardly Global, a locally based organization which works to eliminate the cultural barriers of skilled immigrants and refugees who have moved to the United States. Protiviti employees heard from presenters who have helped in providing these immigrants and refugees with training, individual coaching and guidance in acclimating to the professional expectations of US culture. Personal accounts were also given by immigrants from Bulgaria and Russia who have found success in the program and explained the meaningfulness the organization has brought to their lives and the lives of their families.

The organization targets educated immigrants and refugees who, although often times highly educated and highly competent within their respective fields, are in need of assistance in acclimating their job skills to American culture. Communicational boundaries, job search guidance and employment expectations are but a few of the many factors which Upwardly Global volunteers have helped these immigrants and refugees develop. The organization’s goal is to match these qualified candidates from cultures around the globe with jobs and professions which fit their high personal achievements and skill sets.

Volunteers spoke of the personal satisfaction that Upwardly Global has been brought to their lives by the knowledge that their assistance has made a significant impact of the lives of these immigrants and refugees. On the other side of the coin, immigrants attested to the prosperity and happiness the organization has brought to their families and how their successful transition into United States cultural may not have been possible without the help of Upwardly Global and those who have chosen to provide support.

Various sessions to educate volunteers were noted to be taking place in the near future, as Protiviti hopes to become a larger supporter of Upwardly Global moving forward to further change the lives of those in need.

Location, Location, Location!

I have been thinking a lot recently about location.  Maybe it’s because I just moved to a new city, maybe it’s because I’ve been through four airports in three days, or maybe it’s the conversations that I keep having with students on campus.  For whatever reason, location is on the mind of this recruiter.

Like many companies, Protiviti interviews hundreds of candidates a year for positions across the U.S.  Inevitably during these interviews, the following type of exchange takes place.

Interviewer:  “I understand that you applied to our position in Location X, but I see that you are from Location Y.  Do you want to live in Location X?”
Student:  “I am open to location.”
Interviewer:  “We do have open jobs in our Location Y office, if you prefer to live closer to home.”
Student:  “I would probably prefer Location Y, but really I am flexible.”
(If Location X is Chicago, my next question is always “Have you ever visited Chicago in winter?”)

For various reasons, students feel that employers prefer flexibility on location.  They may feel that their chances of being hired are better in one office versus another.  They may see the entry level job as an opportunity to live somewhere totally different from anywhere they have ever been.  They may be focusing on a location closest to their school, or a location where many of their friends plan to live… For all kinds of reasons, students tend to shy away from taking a hard line on their preferred location, and I understand all of this. I truly get it, I do – but if I have any advice to impart, it is this:

If you do not live in a place where you feel at home, you will not feel fulfilled as you start your career.

There are many things to consider as you choose your first job – it is a unique and exciting time in your life!  Do yourself a favor and reflect on this important item.  Only you can know the decision that is best, taking into account an array of factors, including proximity to family and friends, ability to pursue hobbies and interests, geography, local culture, and yes, even climate.  By thinking it through and identifying your ideal location, you will better position yourself for success both personally and professionally.

A Little Friendly Competition Never Hurts

What does the month of March, the beginning of spring, Hoosiers, Bracketology, Protiviti Managing Directors, and the Irish have to do with winning an iPad and a $500 donation to your favorite charity?

You guessed it! It’s March Madness at Protiviti!

A group of Protiviti’s Managing Directors have put together a National Competition for employees around the annual NCAA March Madness Bracketology. To participate, all you have to do is be an employee, sign up and complete a bracket! First place winner takes the net (pun intended) with an iPad and a $500 donation to their charity of choice. Second place wins an iPad mini. Third place takes an Amazon gift card. Additionally, leaders after each round will win gift cards to our Protiviti store or Starbucks cards.

Left to Right:

Managing Director, Tom (Tom’s personal favorites are Notre Dame and Indiana; however, he is going to go with the West coast school Gonzaga as his #1);

Managing Director, Cory (Unfortunately, Cory’s undergrad alma mater, DePaul, is beyond its glory days in B-Ball, so he is searching for a new team in the Eastern Region of the U.S.);

Managing Director, Jeff (Jeff is currently talking a big game; however, he is not letting us know who will win out on his bracket choices);

Managing Director, Russ (Russ is currently upset his Baylor Bears did not make the big dance and is unsure where he should hang his hat); and

Managing Director, Gordon (Drawing from Gordon’s hometown roots in Connecticut, he is all in for the UConn Huskies)
Do you know anything about basketball?  What would your bracket strategy be?  Many of our employees are completing a bracket for the first time in hopes of victory.  Strategies I have heard so far include picking teams who have the toughest-looking mascot, the weirdest uniform or their favorite colors...  Unfortunately for my colleagues, I must inform them that it is I who will be cutting down the net at the end of this contest, and I look forward to playing Angry Birds on my new iPad in a few weeks.

How is your bracket doing?

New Initiative in New York

Protiviti’s New York office is in the process of chartering a Toastmasters group!

In the early 1900s, the word “Toastmaster” referred to a person who proposed toasts and introduced speakers at banquets. Ralph C. Smedley created the first group in 1924, so naming it to evoke both the power of that type of speaker and the pleasant, social atmosphere of the gatherings. Nearing its 90th anniversary, the organization now has 13,500 clubs and more than 280,000 members in 116 countries.

Notable members of Toastmasters include many notable Politicians (Governors, Senators, House Speakers, Naval and Press Secretaries), many CEOs, International Premiers, NBA coaches and athletes, Olympic athletes, late 60s Rock legends, famous authors, actors, directors, a Miss America, and Debbie Fields Rose - the founder of Mrs. Fields Cookies. Government agencies sponsor more than 280 Toastmasters clubs and almost 400 clubs are sponsored by major companies including Bank of America, IBM, GE, Lockheed Martin, Hewlett Packard, PricewaterhouseCoopers and HSBC.

Protiviti’s group has been started with the same goals as the Founder had in 1924. We hope that our meetings, in addition to helping consultants gain invaluable public speaking expertise, will be enjoyable social gatherings and excellent networking opportunities. Shawn Seasongood and Alex Cacanando, of Protiviti’s New York Office have both been members of Toastmasters clubs in the past and believe it helps foster leadership and communication skills immensely important in consulting. The group will be great opportunity for Protiviti employees with all levels of public speaking experience to get to know others in the office while increasing their marketability. We need more interested members before we can start the charter, so join now and spread the word!

On Saturday, March 16th, the Protiviti Los Angeles Office was able to participate in a Networking Community Service event coordinated by the Loyola Marymount University (LMU) Accounting Society as a part of Heal the Bay’s Nothing But Sand Cleanup. Heal the Bay, a non-profit environmental group, hosts various events throughout the year to restore the Santa Monica Bay. LMU is one of our campuses in which we focus recruiting efforts in Southern California, especially since our office and West Region Managing Director, Tom McClune, is an Alum.  Go Lions!

The annual Beach Cleanup Networking event was held in Venice Beach, CA. Consultants & Alumni Sandra Mercado (2012 grad) and Jennifer Monohan (2011 grad) represented Protiviti at the event wearing their Protiviti hoodies!!!

The ladies were able to help the environment while meeting some students! Jennifer stated that the event was “a great opportunity to meet a few students that will be participating in the upcoming summer conference for sophomores to be held in the Los Angeles office this July!”

Thoughts From An Airport Terminal

Well I'm spending some quality time in the Houston airport today, due to a flight delay, and Casey Jo pointed out the excellent opportunity this provides for a quick post.  I have been instructed to share my makeshift workspace (above, in all its glory) and comment on the importance of being flexible in our line of work.

What I really want to talk about is this article: Auditing Social Media Risks For Financial Institutions.  It was posted recently in the FSA Times and then to our internal social networking site, and I was so excited to see that it was written by three campus hires.  Not only is it well written and relevant to a hot topic in the media, but to me it also highlights the impact that a professional can make beyond his or her day-to-day responsibilities.

Even as you start down your career path, know that it's never too early to take an active interest in research and thought leadership, both within your company and across your broader professional community.  The best strategy for success that I have found is to never stop learning -- and also to make every moment count, including the time spent hanging around at IAH...

Month #1 as a Protiviti Campus Recruiter

$

It has been just about a month since my first day at Protiviti and I’ve had quite an exciting recruiting kickoff as the Chicago Office Campus Recruiter! In celebration of my first month, I’ve compiled a random assortment of things I’ve learned over the last 4 weeks.

1.       Acronyms – And lots of them!  ITA, ITC, PSS, IAFA, MD, AD, and R&C top the list of some of the most common jargon heard around the Protiviti office.

2.       How to “Sink the Biz”- I had the chance to spend some time with our Indiana University 2013 campus hires while at IU for a recruiting event. We spent the evening eating pizza at a local hangout called Nick’s, where they coached me through my first game of “Sink the Biz”, a Bloomington specialty.  Already looking forward to returning to IU in the fall!

3.       Texans love their football – I also had an opportunity to take tour of some campuses in Texas, where I learned just how passionate Texans are about their football teams.  Take Texas A&M’s Kyle Field, for example…until this year no building in the city could, by law, be taller than the home of the Aggies.  It also seats about 20K more fans than Soldier Field, where the Chicago Bears play.  Now that’s some dedication!  The picture below is of me standing outside the stadium in awe of the size.

4.       Social Media is a great way to keep up with all things Protiviti – And if you are reading this blog you probably already know that, but take some time to check out our presence on other social media websites to learn more.  And it doesn’t stop with recruiting efforts– Protiviti even has an internal Social Media outlet called Chatter that the team uses to stay in touch on an informal basis during the work week!

5.       A job at Protiviti is more than just work – In the Chicago office, an employee can find an assortment of ways to get involved outside of the everyday grind.  Sports teams, green initiatives and community involvement and just a few of the things I’ve already seen going on in the last few weeks!

This first month has truly flown by.  Next up for the Campus Recruiting team is planning for the 2013 summer intern program.  Be sure to visit this blog for updates about the program along the way!
